Ezra C. Wachter, who is now living in retirement, spent his active years in agricultural pursuits. He is an honorable and well-to-do citizen of Frederick City. He was born September 22, 1838, and is a son of Philip and Susan E. (Reese) Wachter.

The American ancestor of the Wachter family of Frederick County, Md., came to this country with one or more brothers. He first located in Pennsylvania and thence came to Maryland, settling in Frederick County, in what is now known as Tuscarora District, near Bethel. He was one of the pioneer settlers of the county. He had a son, Philip.

Philip Wachter, son of the emigrant ancestor, was born about 1785. He was married to Anna M. McCormac. They were the parents of a son, Philip. Philip Wachter, Jr., son of Philip and Anna M. (McMormac) Wachter, was born September 7, 1812, and died November 16, 1886. He secured his education in the common schools of the county, and was engaged in farming until a few years previous to his death, when ill health compelled him to retire. He was a prominent man in his day and was a large land owner. At his death he was the possessor of four very fine farms, which he always kept in first class order and well improved with substantial buildings. He was a man who had the respect of all with whom he came in contact. Politically he was a Democrat. He was very active in church work and was connected with the Lutheran Church at Bethel, in which he served in official capacities. Mr. Wachter was married to Susanna Reese, daughter of John and Catharine Reese, of Frederick District. She was born June 6, 1814, and died August 9, 1899. They were the parents of the following children: Lewis P., was born February 21, 1835, now deceased; Susanna E., was born November 3, 1836, and died June 24, 1902, who was married to Franklin Palmer; Ezra C; Andrew J., was born August 10, 1840, of Lewistown District; Dennis J., died young; Wesley A., was born September 4, 1843, of Tuscarora District; Catharine E., was born November 15, 1844, and became the wife of Jacob D. Ezra C. Wachter, son of Philip and Susanna (Reese) Wachter, retired from active farming in 1906, and removed to Frederick City, where he has since resided. He previously made his home in Tuscarora District, in which locality he owns two fine farms, containing about 125 acres of excellent land. These are two of the most desirable places in the district. Mr. Wachter has been identified with agricultural pursuits all of his life, and ascribes his success in life to hard work and strict attention to business. He is well known and highly thought of in Frederick.

Mr. Wachter gives his support and influence to the principles of the Democracy, but he has never sought public office. In religion, he is a member of the Lutheran congregation at Bethel, in Tuscarora District, to which he is a liberal contributor.

Mr. Wachter was married to Julian B. Stull, daughter of Michael and Hannah Stull, from the neighborhood of Bethel.
