Harry E. Zimmerman

From History of Frederick County. p. 1163-1164:

Harry E. Zimmerman, who cultivates the Mrs. Clara A. Hoke farm in Walkersville District, which contains 168 acres of land, with excellent buildings, is an energetic farmer and one of the leading younger citizens of his district. He was born on a farm, lying between Johnsville and Liberty, Frederick County, December 6, 1871, and is a son of John D. and Martha Ellen (Valentine) Zimmerman.

John D. Zimmerman was a native of Frederick County. He died in Walkersville, January 15, 1906, aged about sixty years, and is laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery, at Woodsboro. He followed the vocation of a farmer. He used his right of franchise in favor of the Republican party. In his religious convictions, he was a Lutheran. Mr. Zimmerman was married to Martha Ellen Valentine. She is now residing at Walkersville, and is aged sixty years. They were the parents of nine children, as follows: Edward, Albert, Harry E., Luther, Fanny, Raymond, William, Allen and Emory.

Harry E. Zimmerman, son of John D. and Martha Ellen (Valentine) Zimmerman, was the recipient of a public school education, attending in his native county. He became acquainted with the various phases of an agricultural life on the home farm, and has always followed rural pursuits. In 1900 when he was married, he took charge of his present farm. This is a most desirable property and yields large crops. The barn was built in 1860, and is 100 x 55 feet. The house was built in 1892 by David H. Hoke, and is three stories in height, of brick. Mr. Zimmerman uses up-to-date methods of cultivation and has been very successful in his operation of this place.

In his political opinions, Mr. Zimmerman is a Republican. He is affiliated with the Lutheran Church, in which he has served in the capacity of treasurer and as a member of the church council.

Mr. Zimmerman was married November 14, 1900, to Fanny L. Hoke, daughter of David H. and Clara A. (Geisleman) Hoke. Mr. Hoke is deceased, and a sketch of his life is to be found in this work. Mrs. Zimmerman is a member of the Reformed Church. There are three children born of this union: David William, H. Oscar, and Clara H.

Edward Zimmerman, the eldest brother of Harry E. Zimmerman, is cultivating the Christian Myers farm of 101 acres, near Walkersville. He was born in Walkersville District, Frederick County, July 18, 1867. From the time he was six years old until he reached eighteen, he studied at the Pine Tree school. As a boy he was employed on the home farm, and on the Josiah Valentine (his maternal grandfather) farm, to which place his father removed during the eight years Mr. Valentine was county commissioner. Mr. Zimmerman began life by renting the Dr. Nicodemus farm of 250 acres, at Walkersville, where he lived for a period of fourteen years. In 1903, he located on his present farm. He is a stanch Republican, having cast his first vote for Harrison. He is a member of the Junior Order United American Mechanics. He holds membership in the Walkersville Lutheran Church, where he has served as deacon and elder several times. Mr. Zimmerman was married November 30,1898, to Gertrude Ramsburg, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Creager) Ramsburg, of Walkersville. They have issue: Edith Ellen, Carl S., Elinor E., and Roger E.
