Isaac L. Hankey

Isaac L. Hankey, a prominent farmer of Creagerstown District, Frederick County, Md., son of Peter and Mary A. (Krise) Hankey, was born in Creagerstown District, May 27, 1840.
John Hankey, great-grandfather of Isaac L. Hankey, was born in Germany, May 23, 1736; his wife, also a German, was born in May 1740. In early manhood, John Hankey and his two brothers, came to America where he settled in the northern part of Frederick County. He was a wheelwright, a fine old man, and was employed at his trade until the time of his death. He and his wife rest in the old Lutheran cemetery at Emmitsburg, Md.
Isaac Hankey, son of John and Barbara (Gall) Hankey, grandfather of Isaac L. Hankey, was born April 15, 1769. He was one of the successful farmers of that day and owned two well-improved farms in the upper part of Frederick County. Isaac Hankey was married to Susan M. Apple, who was born January 22, 1773. They had ten children, all now deceased: 1, Elizabeth (Mrs. John Geesey), born April 15, 1793; 2, John, born May 7, 1795; 3, Jacob, born March 29, 1797; 4, Isaac, born April 15, 1799; 5, Barbara (Mrs. Sceis), born June 27, 1801; 6, Susan, born October 12, 1803; 7, Peter, born December 10, 1805; 8, George, bom May 18, 1808; 9, Frederick, born February 3, 1811; 10, Mary A., born January 21, 1814. Mr. Hankey and his family were members of the Lutheran Church.. He died July 19, 1840; his widow died January 5, 1851. They rest side by side in the graveyard at Apple’s church.
Mr. Hankey’s father, Peter Hankey, was born December 10, 1805. He received his education in the public schools of his native district, and spent his life in the cultivation of the soil. He remained on the home farm until his father died. After his father’s death, Mr. Hankey purchased a farm from Basil Wood, on which he remained until the time of his death. He was successful as a farmer and his success is the reward of hard work and close application. Peter Hankey was married to Mary A., daughter of Henry W. Krise. Their children are: 1, Henry W, a farmer of Emmitsburg District; 2, Isaac L.,; 3, James M., deceased; 4, Mary C, married William G. Kolb, a farmer of Creagerstown District; 5, George W. A., of York, Pa. Henry W. Hankey married Mary Duttrow. They had no children. He is by occupation a farmer, and they have resided near Emmitsburg all their married life. James M. Hankey married Emma. J. Long, and located in Waynesboro, Pa., where he died in early manhood. They had four children: Carrie, deceased; John, William and Mary. The family reside in Waynesboro. Anderson married Mollie Stover, of New Midway, Frederick County, and went to York, Pa. They have seven children, and all reside in that city: Ora A., George, Anna, Cora, Myrtle, Alva and Ralph. Mary Catharine (Hankey) Kolb had three children: Charles, Mary, living, and Henry Isaac, dead.
Peter Hankey and his wife were members of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Creagerstown, Md. They are buried in the Lutheran cemetery at Rocky Ridge, Md.
Isaac L. Hankey received his education in the public schools of Creagerstown District, and remained on the home farm working with his father until he was thirty. In 1870, he accepted a position as salesman for J. C. Hechert & Company, tobacco merchants. He was very successful as a salesman and soon had an interest in the business. He is now one of the leading members of the firm. He owes his success in this business to his untiring activity as a salesman. In later life, Mr. Hankey has given a part of his time to farming, in which business also his activity has brought him good fortune. He is the largest land owner in Creagerstown District. Several of the finest farms in the district are his property, among them his father’s homestead which he has cultivated and improved until he has made it one of the most valuable farms in Frederick County. Mr. Hankey is also engaged in threshing and packing hay for which he has two improved machines. He has been an untiring worker in everything that he has undertaken, and to this he owes his financial success, as he began his business career with very little capital. Mr. Hankey is a stanch Republican, interested in all that concerns the well-being of the county, and is highly esteemed by his fellow citizens. He is president of the Creagerstown and Woodsboro Turnpike Company, in which he is a stockholder, and a stockholder in the Woodsboro Canning Company.
Issac L. Hankey was married twice. His first wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Geesey, only lived about two years, dying in early womanhood. They had no children. Sixteen years after her death, he was married to Edna, daughter of William and Catherine Hull (both deceased), whose father was a prominent farmer of Creagerstown District. They have one child, Isaac L. Hankey, Jr., of whom his parents are very proud. Mr. Hankey and his wife are members of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Creagerstown.
