From History of Frederick County. p. 1149:
Jacob M. Huffer, one of the best known farmers in Burkittsville District, Frederick County, Md., owner of a beautiful farm near Burkittsville. Md., son of Joseph L, and Catherine (Mullendore) Huffer, was born on a farm adjoining his present home, just over the line in Middletown District, now owned by Hiram Remsburg, August 8, 1836. (For family history see biographical sketch of his brother, George C. Huffer, of Middletown, published in this volume.)
Jacob M. Huffer began his education in the old subscription schools, and completed it in the public schools of his native district. He grew up on his father’s farm and remained at home, working on the homestead, until the time of his marriage, when he rented the place and cultivated it for six years. In 1871, Mr. Huffer purchased his present home to which he removed in 1872. His farm, which consists of 172 acres of arable land, lies along the Broad Run road, four miles from Middletown, and two and a-half miles from Burkittsville. It was made up from parts of various well-known tracts of country: Kemp Long Meadow; The Irregular Figure; Phillip’s Bargain, resurvey on Drunkard’s Knob; Mistake; Every Little Helps; and Madam’s Defeat. The barn was built in 1849, by Peter Willard, from whom Mr. Huffer purchased the property. The house, a fine three-story brick building, was erected in 1888, by Mr. Huffer. Everything about the place is in good repair, and the well-tilled fields bear witness to Mr. Huffer’s intelligent management. Mr. Huffer is a Republican.
Jacob M. Huffer was married in 1863, to Phoebe Ellen, daughter of Mathias and Phoebe (Routzahn) Ahalt. Their children are: 1, Charles M., at home; 2, Martin Luther; 3, Joshua Samuel. Mrs. Huffer died at the Huffer homestead, in 1869. Mr. Huffer was married, March 7, 1872, to Sarah, daughter of Samuel and Lydia E. (Shafer) DeLauder, of Middletown District, Frederick County, Md. Their children are: 1, Clara Belle, married the Rev. J. W. Reinecke, a minister of the Reformed Church; stationed at St. Johns, Luzerne County, Pa., has six children, Ruth, Ernest, Mary, Clara Belle, Anna Harriette and John Jacob; 2, Mary (Mrs. Harry Huffer), of Broad Run, Frederick County, Md., has one child, Robert. Mr. Huffer and his wife are members of the Reformed Church in Burkittsville, Md. Mr. Huffer has held the office of elder in the church for many years.
