Lewis Otte, a well-known citizen of Frederick and proprietor of the Buffalo Hotel Cafe, at No. 31 and 33 West Patrick street, is a native of the city of Hanover, Germany, where he was born June 10, 1870. He is a son of Theodore and Augusta Otte.
Theodore Otte was born in Germany in 1838, and died in 1906. His wife Augusta is likewise a native of that country, and is living in Hanover, Germany. They were the parents of these children: Charlotte, of Hanover, Germany ; Robert Adolph, of Washington, D. C.; Minnie, of Hanover, Germany; Louisa, of Hanover; and William, of Memphis, Tenn.
Lewis Otte, son of Theodore and Augusta Otte, was educated in his native German city. When sixteen years old he sailed for the United States on the ship “Elba,” landing in New York in September, 1886. He soon after went to Fredericksburg, Va., where he remained until 1888, when he went to Washington, D. C. Here he engaged in the bakery business for one year. He was next employed for one year as a cook at the Arnold Hotel, Sixteenth and I streets South. His next situation was with the Losekam restaurant, Thirteenth and F streets, where he also remained one year. He then followed the occupation of a waiter, working at the Mier Hotel and the Welker Hotel in Washington, D. C, for three years, and thence to Atlantic City, N. J., Staten Island and New York City. In 1895, Mr. Otte went to Philadelphia and worked as a bartender for three years, after which he returned to Washington, D. C, and opened the Villa Flora Club at Brightwood, D. C. This he conducted for one year and then stayed in Washington until 1903, in which year he came to Frederick and opened the Buffalo Cafe. This business he has since conducted and has met with much success. He has always been located at the same stand.
Mr. Otte is independent in politics and is a member of the Presbyterian Church in religion. Fraternally, he is identified with Chippewa Tribe, No. 19, Independent Order of Red Men and Aerie Lodge, No. 1067, Order of Eagles.
Mr. Otte was married in 1896 to Pauline Kunkle, of Philadelphia, Pa. There are no children by this marriage.
Mr. Otte purchased his present property May 1, 1909, and after making many improvements the house is one of the most up-to-date Stag Hotels and Cafe in Western Maryland. It contains elegantly furnished rooms and bath, ladies’ and gents’ private dining rooms, equipped with all the latest and modern conveniences.
