Samuel E. McBride

From History of Frederick County. p. 1129:

Samuel E. McBride, a well known citizen of Middletown district, residing on his well-improved farm, situated a mile and a-half south of Middletown, was born on the old McBride homestead, March 18, 1870. He is a son of Lewis and Sarah (Sigler) McBride.

The McBride family is of Scotch-Irish origin. Henry McBride, the grandfather of Samuel E. McBride, was a farmer. In politics, he was in early life an Old Line Whig, but after the formation of the Republican party he gave his support to that organization. In religion, he was a. member of the Church of God. He was the father of seven children: Henry C, deceased; Lewis; George, deceased; Catharine, the wife of Joshua Norris, of Middletown; Sallie, the wife of Levi Hause, of Ohio; and Mary, the wife of John Flook, of Burkittsville District.

Lewis McBride, son of Henry McBride, was born September 18, 1834. During his active life he followed the occupation of a farmer. He is now living retired on the old homestead, which is located four miles west of Middletown. This place is now owned by his daughter, Laura Wilson. Mr. McBride votes the Prohibition ticket, and is a member of the Church of God. He was married to Sarah Sigler. They were the parents of six children, namely: Laura, the wife of John W. Wilson, a farmer of Middletown District; Alice, the wife of Charles W. Haines, of Washington County, Md.; Millard F., engaged in farming in Jefferson District; Albert H., resides in Middletown District, and is also occupied at farming; Clara E., unmarried, and Samuel E.

Samuel E. McBride, youngest son of Lewis and Sarah McBride, grew to maturity on the place of his father. His education was secured in the public schools. He had been engaged in agricultural pursuits all of his life. In April, 1905, he bought the old Joshua Rudy farm, which contains 61 acres of good land, and upon which there is a substantial two story brick dwelling house with eight rooms and two large halls, and a large barn. In 1897, he had purchased the Asa Remsburg tract of 23 acres which adjoins his present place. Mr. McBride is interested in several of Frederick County’s enterprises. He is a stockholder in the Valley Savings Bank of Middletown, in the People’s Fire Insurance Company, of Frederick, and the Middletown Horse Company. Politically, he is a supporter of the Republican party.

Mr. McBride was married January 9, 1895, to Fannie M. Grove, daughter of David and Marietta (Bopst) Grove. They are the parents of two children: Elsie Viola and Cyrus Samuel.

The Grove family, to which Mrs. McBride belongs, is of German origin, and its members are found among the early settlers of Frederick County. The family has generally been Democratic in politics, and in religion affiliated with the Reformed Church. David Grove was a son of Reuben Grove, a farmer of Frederick County. David Grove married Marietta Bopst, and they had seven children: William, deceased ; Charles; Eugene, deceased; Jennetta, the wife of Lewis Kemp, a farmer; Reuben; Fannie M., married Samuel E. McBride; and John.
